The Material Plane of the Voidrealm is a poisoned ether. The space between stars and worlds is filled with the Luminance. This calm, shimmering, low-density ether is broken by void-storms that surround many stars. While the calm void is easy enough to be traversed by voidships, the deeper one gets from the heart of worlds, the more the laws of magic and physics begin to fray, even fail. Only the specialized hull-plating of the Gnomish Void Ships can withstand the pressure and chaotic storm-fronts that bleed in from the edges of the cosmology and gives any chance to those who wish to traverse worlds.
