Northrealm ProtectorateRealm

The largest region of Amr is the Northrealm Protectorate, governed as a Commonwealth of Mirin. Its allegiance to Mirin stretches far into ancient times, back when Mirin held its ancient name of Amaritin City. Many of the ancient armors worn by the expeditions of Amaritin remain in use by the Northguard, lending to their distinguished appearance. Farville, the capital city of the territory, is most known for guarding the burial site of Amar Conell, the halfling adventurer who led the first expedition to the north and fell to somewhere between one and six young to adult dragons, depending on whom you ask.

The Northrealm Protectorate is locally governed as a federated state, led by a Governor General appointed directly by the King’s Throne, though recently requiring the Queen’s Blessing. The position must be affirmed by the Lieutenant Governor, the second-in-command position elected by the various commanders of the Northguard Legions. While being a traditionalist culture and revering historical relevance, the independent spirit of this region’s denizens welcomed the changes incorporated by the rise of the Kingdom of Mirin. This has allowed the Northrealm Protectorate to expand from being known only as the largest martial ground force of any human civilization, to becoming the home of the second largest capital city in all known realms at half the size of Mirin.

There is also a large presence of dwarfs in the Tinder Mountains to the west. Many dwarf veterans of the Orcish Wars of San had returned home. The Northguard relinquished their posts guarding the entrances of the abandoned dwarf ruins, though conflict ensued as the dwarfs attempted to begin laying claim on lands surrounding their mountains. The dwarfs who had become accustomed to living on the surface, mostly the fiercest veterans, managed to find a new war for themselves against the Northguard.

Compromises made have not fully settled the tensions between the dwarfs and Northguard. Adding weight to the dwarven grievances against the Northguard is the considerable amount of half-orc living among the humans, and what the dwarfs see as filthy breeding practices; most of the Northrealm humans trace some heritage to the large Orc factions that were vanquished by the Northguard. Simply put, the dwarfs feel they left to fight Orc across the sea with the promise that their homes will be protected from Orc by the Amaritin Northguard, only to return home to an Orc Northguard inhabiting their homes.

It is thought that the humans of the Northrealm Protectorate are larger than average humans. Considering most humans here fit just fine in ancient armors, there is not a huge difference. There is some truth, however, in that it is not hard to find abnormally fit beings among the populace, creating a portrait of a land full of barbarian-sized people. Some Northguard joke that the dwarfs have simply spent too much time with the elves and have become accustomed to the elven physique.

Despite the conflict between the dwarf and human settlements, they have assisted each other begrudgingly against the various threats that remain in the region. Tales of harrowing battles against dragons, powerful bandits, and rogue wizards commonly come from these lands, and make for great stories told in more civilized circles, which now includes some areas of Farville.
