They are responsible for training and maintaining combat effectiveness of the legionnaires, running drills and exercises to improve weapon proficiencies, physical condition, and preparedness. In non-traditional battlefields, the Decanus functions as a tactical coordinator, helping the units under their command adapt to diverse environments and allocate duties and missions to the various squads. This could involve logistical coordination, reconnaissance assignments, sentry duties, or other specialized tasks required by the demands of unconventional or magical warfare.

This role is responsible mainly for coordinating logistical tasks and supply duties, directly distributing provisions, overseeing equipment maintenance, resource allocation, and other tasks to ensure operational readiness and sustainability of the century. They are second-in-command, next to the centurion, and provide morale support to the legionnaires as well as carry the banner in battle, rallies the troops, and even leads the century in the occasional charge. The Optio Banneret is usually a very well-liked individual within the century, made even more so by their provisioning, and represents the century’s ethos. They are often bards or barbarians.
- Corporal Decanus (Squad leader). Responsible for commanding small units, typically Hastatus or Velites, overseeing their tactical maneuvers and coordinating their actions on the battlefield. Those of this rank embody and enforce leadership at the front lines, ensure cohesion, discipline, and effectiveness within the front line of a shield wall, or within smaller combat formations.
- Hastatus. This rank corresponds to the position of a lower-ranking legionnaire, typically engaged in frontline combat duties and contributing to the legion’s operational activities. The Hastati formed a vital component of the legion’s infantry forces, actively involved in combat scenarios and battlefield engagements.
- Velites. Light infantry skirmishers who specialize in engaging the enemy at a distance, utilizing javelins and other ranged weapons. They operate with agility and flexibility, often serving as a vanguard and providing tactical support to the main infantry units.
